Sajeeb Wazad Joy has denied reports that she has sought asylum in the US or UK.

Sajib Wazed Joy, the son of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said in an interview on Wednesday that his mother did not want to leave the country. He said her family had to convince her to flee Dhaka. He said he told his mother that the mob would kill her.

“I was worried not because she was leaving Bangladesh, but because she didn’t want to leave Bangladesh. We had to convince her. I told her this is no longer a political movement, it’s a mob… they will kill you,” Joy told Deutsche Welle.

Sajib Wazad Joy denied reports that she had sought asylum in the US or UK. He said Sheikh Hasina would stay in Delhi for some time.

Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka on a military plane on Monday and reached Hindon airport in Ghaziabad. She has been taken to a safe place.

Hours after she left her country, a group of students protesting government job quotas ransacked her home.

He said the decision to resign was made a day ago, but she was forced to resign because thousands of protesters started heading to her house.

“She took the decision a day ago. Only a few of us knew that she would announce her resignation and that she planned to ensure the transfer of power as per the constitution. But when the protesters started marching towards Ganabhaban, we told them out of fear, there is no more time. You must leave now,” he said.

He said his mother had not decided to move from India to another place, adding that she was very upset.

“Sheikh Hasina is fine and she is in Delhi now. My sister is with her. My sister lives in Delhi… She is fine, but she is very upset,” he added.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Tuesday at an all-party meeting that Sheikh Hasina was in a state of shock and the government had given her time before discussing her plans.
