Analysis: Another outing for Geralt
The Witcher game series is based on the book series of the same name by Andrzej Sapkowski. The critically acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the latest major entry in CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher game series, was first released in 2007, making it 15 years since we got our hands on a new Witcher game.
But it’s no surprise that CD Projekt Red is developing a new entry in the series, given the success of Netflix The Witcher TV series (and its benefits). The show is about to enter its third season.
While details about The Witcher 4 are poor at the moment, we expect to see Ciri take on the mantle of the protagonist in this new series entry. The image (above) released alongside the ad shows a Cat in the Snow medal (which belongs to Ciri), rather than Geralt’s signature wolf medal. Moreover, the title of the post is “New Epic”, which indicates a significant change in the game series.
It hasn’t been confirmed, but since The Witcher 3 seemed to mark the end of Geralt’s adventures, Ciri stepping up the next installment in the series would make sense.
We may not know much about the new Witcher game yet, but we’re already happy to hear that it will be built on Unreal Engine 5 rather than REDengine. After all, Cyberpunk 2077 has been plagued by issues since its launch, and the developer certainly wouldn’t want to repeat this most popular franchise.
We hope to hear more about The Witcher 4 in the coming months (including when we’re expecting it) at events like Gamescom 2022 But given that the entry of the new series appears to be in early development, don’t expect the next Witcher expedition to land anytime soon.
