The Coast Guard has rescued a man who spent three days stranded on an uninhabited island after his sailboat broke down in the Bahamas.
Coast Guard crew Paul Clark spotted the hapless sailor firing flares from his crippled vessel Friday near Cay Sal — a 2,000-square-mile sliver of land wedged between Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas. The maritime agency said in a statement.
After locating the stranded sailor, an aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry drops supplies, including food, water, and a radio to establish contact.
“The man told the crew that he had been stranded for three days after his ship broke down during his voyage,” the agency said.
He was later picked up by a Coast Guard cutter and taken to the Royal Bahamas Defense Force “in good health”.
The rescued man was not identified but was described as a 64-year-old Bahamian national.

“We are proud to have saved this man’s life,” said Petty Officer Third Class Dave Craig, a Coast Guard Sector Watcher in Key West.
“This case is a perfect example of why you must have proper safety equipment on your ship. If it hadn’t been for the flame to be seen, the case might not have been so successful.”
