“To be honest, if they had offered me the Justin Reed deal, I would obviously have tried to negotiate, but if that was where they drew their streak in the sand, I probably would have gotten it,” Mathieu said. “I probably to take it. The agents will do their job, but at the end of the day, the player decides whether to sign him or not.”

Mathieu has had meetings with the Saints and the Eagles recently, so he may be approaching his new home for the 2022 season. It won’t be the happy ending he would have set a few months ago, but he will have the opportunity to make a new one wherever he ends up playing.
