Swedish officials say climate activist Greta Thunberg has been charged with insubordination

Prosecutors have charged climate activist Greta Thunberg with disobeying law enforcement in connection with a protest in Malmö, Sweden, last month.

Local newspaper Sydsvenskan reported Wednesday that Thunberg and other activists were arrested after they stopped traffic at the oil terminal in the port of Malmö on June 19.

A Swedish prosecutor’s office said in a brief statement on Wednesday that a “young woman” was charged with disobedience because she “refused to comply with police orders to leave” during the protest. The statement did not identify the woman, but a spokeswoman for the Swedish Prosecution Service, Annika Collin, confirmed that she was Thunberg.

Sydsvenskan said the 20-year-old Swedish activist will go to trial at the end of July. Prosecutor Charlotte Ottosen told the newspaper that the offense of disobedience is usually punishable by fines.

Thunberg’s media team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The protests have been a central part of Thunberg’s climate activism since she rose to international prominence in 2018 when she was 15, and has been detained by police several times in the past.
