Between double-day matches with the Angels, the Mariners brought back the defensive player Mitch Hanniger From the list of infected 60 days. Abraham Toro Picked to Triple-A in the corresponding motion.
Haniger has played in just nine games this year, due to a two-week stint in IL linked to COVID to start the season, and then this extended trip in IL for 60 days due to a Class II elevated ankle sprain. Tonight’s game will be the second time Haniger has been able to enter the field since April 15. 2022 was another injury-plagued year for Hanegger, who missed more than half of the 2019 season and the entirety of 2020 due to a ruptured testicle.
Haniger emerged as a producer bat for sailors in 2017-18, and was named to the AL All-Star Team in 2018. Returning from his long layoff last year, Haniger basically picked up where he left off, hitting .253/.318/.485 with 39 Home games and over 691 games on the board and 157 games in 2021.
Health and strength Haniger is a massive boost to the Mariners’ chances of finally returning to post-season for the first time in 2001. It’s probably safe to assume he’ll get a few extra days of DH to smooth out a return to the squad, but Haniger’s return as a regular right-hander will move in Adam Fraser Returning to a full-time second primary job. Julio Rodriguez He’s still recovering from a wrist injury, but Seattle Stadium, which houses Rodriguez and Hanniger, presents a much more difficult challenge for opposing bowlers.
With just under two months left in the regular season, Haniger will have at least some sort of platform to publish some numbers and add to its market as a free agent this winter. Between his injury date and his age (Haniger will be 32 on opening day), the player would need a major finish to give himself a shot at a lucrative multi-year contract. With the eligible offer now back for all free agents, Haniger could be an interesting candidate to receive and possibly accept a QO, assuming the Mariners are willing to make what will be a $18 million – $19 million investment in Haniger on a one-year deal.
