There is a renewed elimination format american talents This season, which only advances the week’s top two overall voting winners to the end – with no instant saves or any input from the jury. As a result, every hour-long live scores feel like five, as veteran host Terry Cruz struggles valiantly to come up with new ways to procrastinate and build the suspense while slowly decreasing each week’s runners from 11 to 5 to three to two.
In Wednesday’s results, there was a bit of a suspense, because the lead was – just I expected – Endorsed country trio Dolly Parton, Chapel Hart and art magician Yu Hugin. (They will join last week’s top two, saxophonist Avery Dixon and country singer Drake Milligan, in the Season 17 finale that airs Sept. Broadcasting by having another magician – third-placed John Dornboss in season eleven – perform. And let’s just say, if John had done this magic trick again when he was competing AGT In 2016, maybe he will Not They made the top three of the season.
A longtime fan favorite AGT Viewers, John competed too America’s Got Talent: Champions He reached that final in 2019, so fans were excited to see him perform this week. Simon Cowell even said to him, “I’ve missed you, John!” But John’s return was not as victorious as he had expected.
This week John had to ask Simon and the other judges — Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara — to pick random numbers from a box and letters from a board and, based on this information, guess the numbers and colors of four soccer jerseys secretly hanging inside four gym lockers on stage. He correctly predicted three shirts, but when Heidi showed her number, 8, John paused awkwardly and said, “oh. Well, well…we’ll get back to you.” Now it was his turn to stall for a while.
Eventually, John opened Heidi’s locker, revealing a T-shirt with number 20 instead. (Oddly enough, Simon and Heidi each took 8 points out of the wizard’s chest.) However, as a former pro football player for the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles, and New Orleans Saints, John used to perform under pressure — and he used to fumble. Sometimes and accept defeat – so he coped with the embarrassing situation quite skillfully on live TV. And at least guess Heidi’s color, red, correctly.
“I thought you’d pick 20. That’s fine,” John shrugged. “Sometimes in life it’s okay to be apart – because guess what, baby? Every time I take this stage, you all make me feel like a rock star. Being a part of AGT Team, love every second. Whether it’s in the locker room or in my life, I’m trying to be the best mate I can be and also bring an A game, baby. I hope we make the decision to be the best teammate we can be in this world.” A quartet of cheerleaders dressed in the judges’ jerseys (including, yes, Heidi’s red mis-numbered jersey) and Daisy Duke shorts, then jumped to distract the studio audience, who applauded supportive.
Dorenbos fans were sympathetic on Twitter too, so I hope they keep pouring in to see him star in “America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live” in Luxor – which was ostensibly what his debut was supposed to announce this week. Meanwhile, 11 more AGT Next Tuesday, the nominees will compete for their own Vegas residency and a $1 million prize, as the qualifying rounds for Season 17 continue.
And as tonight proved, anything can happen on live TV. I’ll see you later.
