NVIDIA is making the RTX 3080 12GB again

A hardware leak with good contacts with board partners claims that NVIDIA is now producing the RTX 3080 12GB SKU again after being discontinued two months ago.

The RTX 3080 12GB was one of the latest models released this year in January. This card was a cosmetic upgrade over the original 10GB model, but was a necessary update to the GA102 GPU at the time. The RTX 3090 series was very expensive.

Fast forward to August of this year, NVIDIA is having a huge stock problem with the RTX 30 series, there are simply too many cards for sale and too few customers interested in buying a high-end card just two months away from launching the next generation.

But as NVIDIA produces more RTX 3090 cards with a nearly full GA102 GPU, the company is also getting partially broken GPUs, which may end up in SKUs like the RTX 3080 Ti or RTX 3080 10/12GB models. According to MEGAsizeGPU, NVIDIA has just started making 12GB RTX 3080 cards again. Presumably the reason is the huge inventory of GA102 GPUs:

NVIDIA can make 12GB RTX 3080 cards regardless of whether the stock GA102 has enough suitable chips or not. We’ve seen this many times, when the company has repurposed its high-end GPUs for other models, simply to continue producing more affordable SKUs. This may lower earnings, but NVIDIA will get rid of the GA102 stock one way or another.

The 12GB RTX 3080 features 8,960 CUDA cores (+256 more than the original), increased memory size to 12GB and a wider memory bus of 320 bits. Interestingly enough, NVIDIA has never announced an MSRP for this card.
