The first incident occurred on Friday, when a PT-91M Twardy tank failed due to engine problems on a highway near the country’s parliament building, the military said in a statement on Saturday.
Less than 24 hours later, a main armored vehicle – mainly used to tow heavy weapons – broke down on a busy road outside the National Museum in the heart of the capital.
A team of mechanics completed the repair work by 12:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, according to the military. The car then continued its journey to Dataran Merdeka, or Independence Square, where Malaysian Independence Day celebrations will take place on August 31. The military said the two vehicles took part in the exercises on the parade.
“The army apologizes for the two incidents and will ensure that this does not happen again,” the army statement said. “But should this be repeated, a backup recovery team will be dispatched to the site as quickly as possible to tow the stricken vehicle away to avoid traffic jams.”
