Madonna’s older brother, Anthony Ciccone, has passed away. He was 66 years old.
Musician Joe Henry, who is married to Madonna’s sister Melanie Ciccone, raised heartbreak Announcement via Instagram Saturday.
“My brother-in-law, Anthony Gerrard Ciccone, got off this plane of the earth last night. I’ve known him since I was 15, in the spring of our lives in Michigan, so many years have passed now,” Henry, 62, captioned a black-and-white photo of a late family member .
As Brother Dave Henry (who took this photo) notes here, Anthony was a complex character; God knows: we intertwined in moments as true brothers can. But I loved him, and understood him better than I was willing to let go of him at times.
Henry added that while the “problems fade away”, the family remains – with “hands outstretched” at the table.
“Farewell, then, Brother Anthony. I want to believe that the God in whom your blessed mother (and me) believed in her is there, waiting to receive you,” he continued. “At least for today, no one will dissuade me from this vision.”

One of eight children, Madonna grew up in Michigan, where her older brother is believed to have resided when he died.
Their mother, Madonna Ciccone, died after a battle with breast cancer at the age of 33 in 1963.
For his part, Anthony has long suffered from alcoholism and has been homeless for several years. He was reportedly at one point living under a bridge in Michigan.
In December 2017, The Daily Mail reported that Anthony had completed a program at a rehabilitation facility and later reconnected with his family at home.
Years ago, Anthony previously spoke out against Madonna and the rest of their family, accusing them of not caring for him.
“I’m a zero in their eyes—not a person. I’m embarrassed. If I freeze to death, my family probably won’t know or care about it for six months.” he said in 2011in the Daily Mail.
“My dad would be so happy if she died of hypothermia he wouldn’t have to worry about that anymore. He’s old school, he grew up depressed,” he continued, before claiming that he and the “Vogue” singer “never loved each other.”
“I never loved her in the first place, she never loved me. He claimed we never loved each other.
