Olympic Games 2024: Pope calls for “a peace in wars”
Ahead of the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, which begin on Friday, this Sunday, Pope Francis reiterated his call for a global ceasefire during the event, praising the unifying power of sport. “Sport has great social power, its ability to bring people of different cultures together in a peaceful way,” he told the pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square.

The Russian military said on Sunday it had captured two small towns in eastern Ukraine, continuing to hold on to this part of the front despite suffering heavy losses and facing fewer Ukrainian forces.
“Divisions of the Western bloc have liberated Rosovka (Andreyevka in Ukrainian) and Pechanoe Nizhny (Bishchany in Ukrainian) located in the Lugansk and Kharkiv regions respectively,” the Russian Defense Ministry reported in its daily account.
