Olympic Games 2024: Pope calls for “a peace in wars”

Ahead of the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, which begin on Friday, this Sunday, Pope Francis reiterated his call for a global ceasefire during the event, praising the unifying power of sport. “Sport has great social power, its ability to bring people of different cultures together in a peaceful way,” he told the pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square.

“I believe that this event will be a symbol of the inclusive world we want to create, and that athletes, with their sporting witness, can be ambassadors of peace and true examples, especially for young people,” the Pope continued. “In ancient tradition, the Olympic Games were an opportunity to establish a truce in wars and to express a genuine desire for peace.”
