Update on the situation in Ukraine

  • Ukrainian officials said the Russian army had attacked the southern regions of Mykolaiv and Odessa. “The enemy has again attacked the Odesa region with drones,” regional governor Oleg Kiper said in a telegram early Monday. “Energy infrastructure is damaged and parts of (city) Odessa are without electricity,” he added. Ukraine's military spokeswoman Natalia Kumenyuk said in an interview on national television that 11 people were wounded in Mykolaiv, in the south of the country, following a Russian drone attack.
  • In Russia, a fire broke out at a major power plant in the Rostov region, the local governor said, following Ukrainian drone strikes in the region. Two units at the Novocherkassk power plant, one of the largest power plants in southwestern Russia, have been taken out of service, governor Vasily Golubev said in a message posted on Telegram. The Rostov region (south) borders Ukraine and the regional capital is a major center for planning Russian military operations.
  • The Ukrainian Armed Forces said that in the morning they “managed to attack the amphibious ships Yamal and Azov, as well as the communications center and other infrastructure of the Russian Black Sea Fleet”. Footage shared on social media showed a large explosion in the city, sending a fireball and black smoke into the air, as Russian air defenses appeared to intercept the incoming projectiles. Satellite images show that Russia has moved a large part of its fleet further east towards the port of Novorossiysk. Moscow also recently changed its navy chief.
  • The Ukrainian capital Kyiv and the western part of Lviv were also hit by “massive” airstrikes early Sunday, officials said, but there were no casualties. The Ukrainian Air Force said it shot down 18 of 29 missiles launched overnight and 25 of 28 explosive drones. “Russia has not given up its goal of destroying Q at any cost,” said Sergei Babko, head of the city's military administration.
  • Facing a defensive Ukraine and suffering from delays in additional Western aid, Russian forces are seeking to maximize their advantage on the battlefield. In recent days, the Russian army has also made advances in Bagmut's neighbor to the east, Tzasiv Ir, and areas west of Avdivka, which were destroyed and captured by the Russians in February.
  • Ukraine's ally Poland said a Russian cruise missile aimed at western Ukraine violated its airspace for about forty seconds, the third such incident since the war began. He announced that he was going to summon the Russian ambassador.

After an attack launched on February 24, 2022 that sank numerous Russian boats, it scored a new victory by attacking two Russian ships in annexed Crimea. The Ukrainian Armed Forces said on Sunday “We were able to attack both the Yamal and Azov warships, as well as the communications center and other infrastructure of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.”. It's a shame for Russia to abandon its blockade of Ukrainian-controlled beaches.

“Thank you (…) to all our heroes who clear Crimea and the Black Sea from the presence of invaders. It is a difficult task, but our soldiers are gradually accomplishing it”He welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his daily speech.

Footage shared on social media showed a large explosion in the city, sending a fireball and black smoke into the air, as Russian air defenses appeared to intercept the incoming projectiles.

Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Rasvojev announced an attack “big” Ukrainian missiles targeting the city. He said one person was killed and four were wounded, without mentioning any damage to the Russian warships.
