SEATTLE — On Father’s Day, Lance Lane’s father of four tied a franchise strikeout record and halted a recent set of struggles. But he couldn’t enjoy any of it.

The White Sox right-hander was all focused after Sunday’s game, the three runs he gave up in the 5-1 series loss to the Mariners at T-Mobile Park.

“My stuff was fine today, but we got lost,” Lynn said. “It doesn’t matter how much you hit if you don’t win the game.”

It was a disappointing conclusion to what should have been a festive day. Lane hit out 16, tying the record first set by Jack Harshman on July 25, 1954, and not only bested his previous career high (12), but also became the first major league player to hit 14+ this season, the 16K being the largest percentage since Braves’ Spencer Strider also hit 16 on September 1, 2022. Lynn caused 33 swings and misses, the most in the Majors this season and tied for fourth-best mark in the pitch-tracking era (since 2008).

He also hit the eighth inning on a day when manager Pedro Grifoll was worried about the bullpen. All that, and it still ended in a loss, moving his record to 4-8.

“I can’t say enough about Lance today,” Grifoll said. “.

Lynn has been struggling this year. He entered Sunday with the second-worst ERA among all qualifying pitchers (6.75), and gave up at least five runs in each of his previous three starts. Against Seattle, there was only one small picture in an almost full day.

Lane did not allow a baserunner until the third inning, when Cal Raleigh drove off with a single. A few batters later, a walk to J.B. Crawford hit a two-run double off defending Rookie of the Year Julio Rodriguez.

Lin batted again and retired the next eight batters. In doing so, he continues to add to his strikeout total, with at least two K’s per turn. Perhaps Lin Lin was the only one who didn’t pay attention because the number of strikes kept rising.

“You just want to put on a good show, to be honest,” Lin said. “You don’t really start to think about records or anything, especially like a one-game situation. I didn’t even know how many I had.

“[Pitching coach Ethan Katz] At some point, you say, “Hey, high career.” I was like, “From what?”

Lin tied the Mike Ford strikeout record to finish in the seventh inning, 113 points of the day. He came back in the eighth inning with a chance to set a new franchise mark, but only threw one pitch when former teammate Colten Wong drove in with a single.

At that point, reliever Reynoldo López entered from the pen. Lopez had a few runs before walking the bases loaded and then giving up a two-run triple to Jared Kilinick, putting the game out of reach.

Despite Lane’s quality, Chicago hitters were ineffective against Seattle outfielder Bryce Miller. The White Sox’s run came only in the sixth, when Elvis Andrus hit a leadoff double and came home on Andrew Benintendi’s single.

“It’s definitely frustrating for us as an offense, seeing Lance do everything he can. He’s been off his feet all day, and it’s disappointing we couldn’t score more runs for him,” said Jake Burger.

The White Sox have now lost six of the past eight, dropping both road series at the Dodgers and Mariners. Chicago heads home for six-game playoffs against Texas and Boston, hoping to turn their fortunes around.

“I have confidence in these guys,” said Grifoll. “We just have to keep working. We have to work. There is no other cure for that. We have to get back to work.”
