iPhone 15 introduces an upgraded UWB chip to support Vision Pro

Apple officially announced its new Vision Pro platform at WWDC at WWDC this month, with a release date of “early 2024.” Now, trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is out with a new report detailing Apple’s plans to better integrate the iPhone with the Vision Pro ecosystem, starting with the iPhone 15 later this year.

in New post on TwitterKuo explains that Apple will “aggressively upgrade the hardware specifications” of the iPhone as part of its efforts to build a competitive ecosystem surrounding the Vision Pro. “One of the key success factors for Vision Pro is the ecosystem, including integration with other Apple hardware products, and the related key hardware specifications are Wi-Fi and UWB,” Kuo explains.

It is said that the first step in this process is to upgrade Ultra Wide Slide Inside the iPhone 15. According to Kuo, the iPhone 15 will likely use a new version of the Ultra Wideband chip, which Apple currently classifies as the U1 chip, to be more efficient and more reliable.

“It is likely that the iPhone 15 will see an upgrade to the UWB specification, with the production process moving from 16nm to a more advanced 7nm, allowing for improved performance or reduced power consumption for close interactions,” says Kuo.

Apple’s U1 chip first appeared in the iPhone 11, and has been included in every iPhone model since then. The U1 chip is also present in Apple’s AirTag Item Tracker, Apple Watch Series 6 and later, HomePod mini, 2nd generation full-size HomePod, and the latest generation AirPods Pro charging case.

Apple uses the U1 chip for a number of different things, including Find My features, Handoff, Precision Finding, AirDrop, and more. Kuo believes that an upgraded version of the U1 chip will improve the performance of these features and also play a key role in the integration between the Vision Pro and other Apple products.

iPhone 16 with Wi-Fi 7

Looking to the future, Kuo says the iPhone 16 is set to be Apple’s first iPhone to support Wi-Fi 7 technology. “It is likely that the iPhone 16 will be upgraded to Wi-Fi 7, which will be more conducive to the integration of Wi-Fi 7,” the analyst explains. Apple with hardware products running on the same local network provides a better ecosystem experience.”

Wi-Fi 7 is the next generation A standard for Wi-Fi technology that promises a significant improvement in transfer speeds and data throughput. In fact, the Wi-Fi Alliance specifically mentioned the benefits that Wi-Fi 7 will bring to virtual and augmented reality technology.
