Hundreds of flights were delayed and canceled at Charlotte Douglas International Airport – WSOC TV

Date:

Charlotte – Hundreds of flights were delayed and more than a hundred canceled at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Sunday, according to the website. FlightAware.

Most of the delays came from American Airlines and its subsidiaries, PSA Airlines and Piedmont Airlines.

Among the cancellations, nearly 60 were from American Airlines, more than 30 from PSA Airlines, six from Endeavor Air, two from Jazz Air, and one from Envoy Air.

Of the more than 500 delays, nearly 300 were from American Airlines, more than 100 were from PSA Airlines, and more than 30 were from Piedmont.

American Airlines told Channel Nine that weather and air traffic control initiatives are largely responsible for the delays.

One representative said the weather creates a domino effect that creates the perfect storm for delays and cancellations.

Air traffic control sometimes establishes a ground delay or ground hold program in effect that controls the amount of incoming flights.

Weather delays can also affect the flight sequence of cabin crew, causing some to be displaced or grounded and unable to fly.

Passenger Caroline Roberts said she was aware that some things were out of the airline’s control, but said she wanted more notice.

“No one called me to say my flight was delayed or canceled or anything so I could have stayed in Connecticut with my daughter, and I’m here now, and I don’t know when I’m going home,” said Roberts.

Maria Zambrano said her travel headache started when she arrived Saturday from the Dominican Republic.

“We weren’t sure if our flight would be canceled or go ahead, and eventually they canceled it. I had to find a hotel and run into Uber hassles,” Zambrano said.

Passenger Danielle Olson flew to Charlotte from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport because her flight was delayed and she was afraid she might miss her flight in Charlotte.

Olson arrived in Charlotte only to encounter a similar problem.

“We flew here for at least two hours, just checked in, and the flight got delayed to our late flight time anyway,” Olson said.

These passengers aren’t the only ones who have faced delays and cancellations this summer.

The The Wall Street Journal I recently reported that Charlotte Douglas was part of the top five airports with the worst delays this summer, with nearly 30% of delayed flights and more than 3% canceled.
