Is the Galaxy Z Flip 5 coming to fix everything that went wrong with the Z Fold 4? Now we’re talking, Samsung!
A larger external display, less noticeable crease, and a more efficient chip may make the new Samsung Flip a viable alternative to other phones.
The original Galaxy Z Flip was a groundbreaking device when it first launched in early 2022. Samsung took what was considered a “dream” and made it a reality — a regular phone that folds in half, or in other words, a modern flip phone.
That said, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the original Galaxy Z Flip was a first-gen device that Samsung was quick to chip out of to make a statement (I guess there’s no mistaking it; though if you ask me, I’m not a big fan of devices in half baked). Funny enough, back then Motorola also managed to beat Samsung to the punch, releasing its first foldable Razr in 2019.
- At $1,400, the original Galaxy Z Flip was pricey
- Battery life was lackluster due to the ineptitude of 2020 Qualcomm chips
- It didn’t bring a top-notch camera system
- It had a main display that was very easy to scratch/damage
But the other thing that stood out about Samsung’s first Galaxy Z Flip was the small screen on the back of the device. Smaller than a fitness tracker, the Flip’s rear screen was hardly useful enough to justify its existence — it lets you peek at your time and date, and control your music.
Fast forward to today, the latest Galaxy Z Flip 4 offers a much larger external display. good. However, despite the (literally) huge upgrade compared to the original, you can still argue that the Flip 4’s external display is quite small.
- For starters, the Fold 4’s external display looks awkward; Placed horizontally (if you’re holding the phone straight), the The Galaxy Z Fold 4 doesn’t really let you frame your selfies/TikToks when using the rear cameras
- Of course, despite being larger, the Flip 4’s external screen is still… small; Size matters here
- Last but not least, hardware doesn’t tell the whole picture; How you use the foldable phone’s external screen depends on the software — in other words, what the phone maker lets you do and what it doesn’t with that screen
Oppo Find N2 Flip is what the Galaxy Z Flip 4 should have been (but it still has one big problem)
The Oppo Find N2 Flip puts the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in the spotlight with a larger external display, no crease and a mechanism that allows it to close. But it’s not perfect!
So, when talking about outdoor displays and how good they are to use, there’s no way to skip bringing up the current industry standards – Oppo Find N2 Flip and its massive external screen, which apart from being much larger than the screen in Samsung Flip, is also trending. The Oppo Find N2 Flip’s external screen is roughly the size of the main (and only) screen on the original iPhone from 2007; So it’s like having an iPhone mini attached to the back of your phone
However, even the large external screens on foldable phones only matter when used properly. As you know, until now, Oppo does not allow users to simply use the Oppo Find N2 Flip’s external screen as a smaller version of the main screen, with full functionality.
It doesn’t take a genius to see that this is a missed opportunity to give those who don’t want to use big screens all the time but still want full control over their devices, instead, a set of predefined widgets. Obo, come on?
Galaxy Z Flip 5’s massive external display has the potential to change the way you use your phone; Less noticeable crease and gap, too
I used to say that a large foldable design made more sense, but the Galaxy Z Flip 5 with a large external screen could change that!
This is where the Galaxy Z Flip 5 (and Motorola Razr 2023) comes into the picture. Basically, Samsung is late to the “big outdoor display game” but the company still has a chance to do it better/right, which is what really matters.
Imagine being able to use your big 6.8 inch screen at home to enjoy content, but also being able to fold your phone in half, walk out the door, and have the option to use your phone as… a mini version of it.
I’ve talked about it before, but the sheer convenience of not having to handle a heavy phone, with a huge screen that can barely be operated with one hand, is why I still choose to use the iPhone 13 mini as my primary device. And, as mentioned above, Samsung (and Motorola) can finally give people like me the best of both worlds.
That is, of course, if Samsung doesn’t go Oppo’s way and limit what you can do with the entire display back of the Flip 5, which would be a missed… opportunity. No need to applaud.
Galaxy S23 Ultra screen size phone And That your iPhone is too small? That might be… one of my dream form factors, Samsung. Well, one of them.
Anyway, of course, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is not expected to bring a revamped external display. We also expect:
- Greater performance and efficiency (longer battery life)
- Improved camera system (the ability to better use the external monitor as a viewfinder will make using the rear camera a pleasure)
- Less noticeable screen crease (thanks to the new waterdrop hinge) and no to no gap when the phone is closed (keep in mind we’re banking on leaks and rumours, so nothing’s been confirmed yet)
- Same price $999, which can be considered a discount, since prices are generally going up at the moment
Are you excited to see the Galaxy Z Flip 5 (or Motorola Razr 2023) with a full display back? I know I am! Step aside, Galaxy S23 Ultra!
