Elon Musk sets limits on reading new daily Twitter posts

Date:

Elon Musk announced Saturday that Twitter will temporarily limit the number of tweets users can read per day — with separate limits for paid and unpaid users — to combat computer programs combing through posts to extract useful data from the platform.

It is not clear how long these limits will last and what their lifting will depend on. Musk did not respond to a request for comment.

Verified accounts will be limited to reading 10,000 posts per day, while unverified accounts will have access to 1,000 posts per day, Musk said. chirp. New, unverified users, who joined the platform after Saturday’s announcement, only have access to 500 posts per day. The change follows significant backlash over initial tweet limits set by the company on Saturday afternoon, which allowed 6,000 for verified tweets, 600 for unverified tweets and 300 for new profiles.

The news comes on the heels of an announcement by the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX on Friday that tweets cannot be viewed without logging into an account. He described the change as a temporary measure to deter third parties from uploading data from the platform. In a tweet, Musk expressed his dismay at what he described as “extreme levels of data mining” by AI companies. He again cited the scrapping of data on Saturday as the reason for imposing the limit. Chatbots like ChatGPT are based on sets of data, most of which are taken from the Internet.

About an hour after the border catcher announced, he said chirp Again that prices will go up “soon” to 8000 for verified accounts, 800 for unverified accounts and 400 for new unverified accounts.

Musk’s post did not describe how the change will affect Twitter features such as the voice chatting platform, Spaces. However, after Musk’s post, many users began sharing screenshots of their home Twitter pages with the message “rate limit exceeded,” limiting their ability to view replies to tweets or posts on their home feed.

Website Downdetector noted that user reports of Twitter crashes spiked at 8 a.m. ET on Saturday and continued throughout the day.

The restrictions mark the latest drastic change by Musk, who headed the social media company after buying it in October for $44 billion. Since taking office, Musk has reinstated several banned accounts, including former President Donald Trump’s, stripped verification tags from public figures and instead offered blue checkmarks to anyone willing to pay $8 a month.

A year ago, Musk asked, “Is Twitter dying?” He may have his answer.

Advertisers fled in droves, raising questions about how the company made money. Amid what observers described as a chaotic period, Musk in May appointed Linda Iaccarino, formerly NBCUniversal Advertising and Global Partnerships Chairman, as CEO of Twitter.

Twitter’s changing user experience and frequent glitches have led some users to migrate to similar social media sites such as Mastodon and Bluesky. Mita also has it It said He suggested offering his Twitter clone.

Plussky, a platform backed by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, is similar to its predecessor. The company said in a mail On their platform on Saturday afternoon that they were facing a record spike in traffic following Musk’s announcement. The app, described as a decentralized social network, is currently available by invitation only and paused their registrations in response to a spike in activity on Saturday.
