It’s been a few days since NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card was released at an exorbitant $1,199 and it seems consumers aren’t buying it (literally). Days after its launch, the card is not selling well in the consumer segment and there are many reasons.
Consumers React NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Graphics Card $1199, Less Out of Stock than the 4090 and Still Stock at Retailers
in Our own reviewWe found the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 to be an impressive card in terms of overall performance and power efficiency, however, the price NVIDIA is asking is simply ridiculous. The 4080 launched at $1,199, making it the biggest price bump we’ve ever seen on an 80-class GeForce graphics card.
Just to set the record straight. The $699 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 launched two years ago. GeForce RTX 3080 12GB launched at 899 US. Comparing these prices to $4080 in the US for 1999, we see a 71.5% uptick and a 50% uptick in price overall. Previously, NVIDIA’s “80” class cards had positioned well in the $550 to $700 range for several years. Here is a comparison of different Gen GeForce GPU prices:

If we take cryptocurrency out of the equation for a second (which has helped artificially inflate card prices), users who have already paid $700 or $800 for an RTX 3080 simply aren’t willing to shell out more than $1k for a class ’80’ graphics card on Despite all the performance and all the great features it offers. And that brings us to today.

NVIDIA’s 4090 was pretty much sold out at launch.
Retailers still have the 4080 in stock. 😶🌫️😶🌫️

Retailers in almost all regions are stocked with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card. This isn’t a sight seen after the launch of the RTX 4090 and it’s certainly not because of the massive inventory that NVIDIA has for the RTX 4080. In fact, based on the numbers we have, NVIDIA GeForce RTX shipments are 4080 is close to 30,000 units.
That’s 70% less than the RTX 4090 shipments were in 100,000 units a few weeks ago (report us here EXCLUSIVELY) It is currently approaching 130,000 units. So the entire line of RTX 40 series cards has shipped around 160,000 units. That’s 30,000 RTX 4080 and 130,000 RTX 4090 units. So despite the lower shipment quantity, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 is still having a hard time selling and consumers are simply either waiting for a cheaper solution under the $1000 category or getting the RTX 4090.
Here are just a few examples of different stores in the US that carry stacks of RTX 4080 graphics cards that no one is interested in buying:

Here is the situation at most retailers and during that Newegg All of their cards are sold out, it looks like eBay scalpers may have a big part in causing this shortage as the site is loaded with cards priced over $1,600 and even some over $2,000 (we don’t recommend buying any of these simplified cards):
This brings us to the third part of the story which is the pricing of the single AIB model. Most NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 cards are priced proportionally to the RTX 4090 Founders Edition or reference-priced AIB models. For example, the RTX 4080 ROG STRIX and TUF Gaming from ASUS are currently $1,500 and $1,549, respectively. We recently covered an anime-inspired model with a higher price tag than the RTX 4090. The RTX 4090 offers a 30-40% uptick in performance over the RTX 4080, so users would rather pay for that extra performance and massive VRAM pool for 10-15% more than getting 4080 is a steep price.
The last and most important thing stopping consumers from buying an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card is the imminent launch of AMD. Radeon RX 7900 series graphics cards that the red team was marketing directly against the RTX 4080and throwing bullets at the 16-pin connectors (It is now confirmed as a user error), its absolutely massive reference models and the bet on its completely new set of features. The prices are very attractive at $899 and $999 but despite that, we recommend our readers to wait for the final reviews. Regardless, that doesn’t change the fact that the GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card offers the worst performance hits for the dollar right now.
