In 2023, an annular solar eclipse will cross the sky in North America, creating an unmissable ring of fire that won’t occur again in this part of the world for over a decade.

The eclipse will cross North, Central, and South America on Oct. 14, 2023, starting at 9:13 a.m. PDT in Oregon, and will pass through Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas before continuing into Mexico and into South America.

The annular solar eclipse of 2023 will create the infamous “ring of fire” where the moon takes its position directly between the sun and planet earth, but you would have to be along this annular path in order to see it. The eclipse will be partially visible across North America, even as far away as Maine, but with less coverage of the sun the farther from the annular line the viewer is.

How to watch a solar eclipse

Since this is an annular eclipse, and the ring of fire is present, it is imperative that you use a solar filter regardless of how you view it, and regardless of whether you are inside or outside the line of the ring.

There are solar eclipse glasses and special filters for cameras, binoculars, and telescopes to help you view the event safely. Viewing without the filter can cause damage to the retina and even blindness, according to Space.com.
