These newly released devices include Ryzen 7 7800X3D octa-core processor and A620 chipset motherboard. This combination of a high-end gaming CPU and an entry-level motherboard could become more popular, in fact, it was one of AMD’s recommended configurations. However, the A620 isn’t a premium design, so it shouldn’t be the first choice. The A620 is indented for the entry-level segment, especially when considering the 65W Ryzen 7000s.

However, some A620 motherboards come with more powerful VRMs and motherboard makers have confirmed that these models will support higher than the recommended TDP (65W). This is how you might end up with a system on a budget that isn’t hampered by hardware.

Exactly this was tested by our creator, who compared the 7800X3D CPU on two platforms: the high-end X670 builds and the entry-level A620. Both systems use DDR5-6000 memory because the A620 chipset supports EXPO (Memory Overclocking Profiles). Minteger used a Gigabyte A620 Gaming X motherboard with an air cooler, and later compared this data to what was achieved on the X670 platform.

The differences start with gaming clock speeds, as the X670 actually releases more power for the CPU, which runs from 4.8 to 4.9 GHz. You see the same CPU on the A620 platform from 4.4 to 4.6 GHz, which undoubtedly has an impact on performance. During our looped Cinebench test, CPU packet power fluctuated around 81 watts with the A620, while the X670 board showed close to a steady 95 watts. However, as shown below, this difference is negligible in synthetic tests (5%), while it is less in games (3%).

Despite the slight differences, gamers who want peace of mind should probably look at the B650 chipset instead, which is a perfect middle ground between the platforms tested. Some B650 motherboards are only $25-$50 more expensive, but in this case, one gets official support for 65W + TDP CPUs and PCIe Gen5 storage, if ever needed.
