A look at Michigan State University’s Unprecedented Spring Game Recruitment Weekend

Date:

On Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m., the Michigan State Spartans are set to open their doors to the public for the 2022 Spring Game. While it’s not a traditional game, the enthusiasm and energy toward the event is unwavering. The excitement was not only reflected by the fan base, but also by looking at recruits across the country. One look at our VIP Visitor list for the 2022 Spring Game It just shows how unprecedented this event is for Michigan State’s program.

MSU . coach Mel Tucker He knows the significance of Saturday’s spring game in terms of his team’s recruitment efforts. In turn, he wants fans to show up and create a lively atmosphere for his recruits, and touches on how the recruits compare to the other spring games they attend. “It makes a difference, because recruiting, we’re competing for players, we’re competing against other programmes. In recruitment, the competition, a lot of it, is about comparison. So they’re going to compare their experience here with the experiences they see elsewhere, so we need to do our best” .

Last year, MSU had a lot of visits expected for its spring 2021 game despite significant hurdles. There was a limit on attendance due to COVID, forcing every spectator to obtain tickets in order to attend, which is difficult due to the scarcity. And since the pandemic also caused the death of a conscript, the coaching staff couldn’t do anything to ensure that recruits got those tickets. However, MSU had more than 15 scholarship targets to attend the game and it was considered a very successful outcome.

This positive result last spring led to the growing belief that this year’s match would be an even bigger spectacle, as those aforementioned hurdles disappeared and the program kicked off a massive 11-2 season. Well, that belief will definitely pay off.

MSU is set to host nearly 40 scholarship targets for this year’s Spring Game, with the talent level well above last year’s game. The three most anticipated visitors to the game are 247 five-star people in Germany David HicksRB Robin Owensand OT Francis Mawegwa. While their being five-stars is impressive enough, they from Florida (Mauigua) and Texas (Hicks and Owens) begin to make the point thatThe geographical composition of the entire visitor list is almost as impressive as the level of talent it has.

Keep in mind that visits to the Spring Games are considered unofficial, which means that school staff cannot pay possible airfare, accommodation, and food as they can for official visits. So when you have players from all over the country making casual visits to Michigan, it really underscores how quickly the program’s nationwide profile goes up. This might be the most important takeaway from this entire weekend, if you’re trying to use it as a metric to evaluate the course of the program.

In addition, this impressive out-of-state appearance also continues after the five-star section of the visitor list. Just One Of the top 11 visitors in the 2023 rank came from Michigan, while only two of the top 11 visitors came from the Midwest ever (Debyeby and Thompson). That’s nine of the top 11 possibilities coming from an SEC country. This would be impressive even for a long-time traditional recruiting force, not to mention the school now preparing to make noise while… Mel Tucker era.

Let’s look at more numbers behind the entire visitor list (as of 11:00 p.m. Thursday):

  • 117 – # of “total stars” when added
  • 42 – # from well-known visitors So far (only counting kids who have FBS shows)
  • 17 – # Five-star and four-star attendance
  • 12 – Number of states represented (Texas, Michigan, Florida, Georgia, California, Tennessee, New Jersey, Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, North Carolina, Alabama)
  • 5 – # of current commitments to attend (which are all)

It is important to note that visitor lists often grow until the last minute. Kids in the area have the ability to make plans at any moment because they’ll be arriving on campus, while some kids from outside the district may be missed during the research phase simply because it’s a network too wide to throw in. As the game approaches, these gaps are being filled in and these numbers will only grow in the next couple of days.

All in all, seeing star power in East Lansing this weekend can’t help but make fans wonder: If this is what the staff have cooked up after just one season of wins And Before construction begins on Tom Izzo’s new multi-million dollar soccer building, how high will the program ceiling be? Mel Tucker?

While there is only one way to truly know the answer to this question, one thing is still certain. For Michigan State to win a national title in the era of college football, the Spartans would need to achieve unprecedented success in their enlistment trajectory. Well, this weekend visitor list definitely matches the description. If Mel Tucker, Saeed Khalif and the staff can start landing these guys in the official visit season, this weekend may be seen as the real catalyst for a special era of Michigan State football.
