Matt Carpenter Signs Major Major League Deal With New York Yankees

The New York Yankees signed the All-Star Team three times Matt Carpenteradding a veteran player to the list of injured.

The Yankees announced Thursday that Carpenter, who has spent parts of the past eleven seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, has signed a major league contract and has been added to their active roster.

He was added to the Yankees lineup in the designated hitter, eighth hitter, for Thursday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays after Aaron Hicks He was scratched by a tight right hamstring.

New York also chose to hold 31-year-old Manny Panuelos of Triple A Scranton/Wilks Bar before the series opens Thursday in Tampa Bay. Banuelos was in the Yankees minor league system from 2008 to 2014 but did not make it to the major league club during that time.

Carpenter, 36, has struggled offensively over a long period during his last three seasons with the Cardinal, hitting just 0.203 with 22 home points in 309 games from 2019 to 2021.

The former TCU star joined the Texas Rangers on a minor league deal earlier this season but was released last week from Team Triple-A and became a free agent in a mutual decision due to a lack of opportunity with the big league team. He hit 0.25 with six home hurdles and 19 RBIs in 21 games at Triple-A Round Rock.

Left-handed Carpenter joins the Yankees without a third baseman Josh Donaldsonwho is listed as infected with COVID-19 and also faces a one-game suspension for his comment last week on the White Sox star. Tim Anderson.

New York is also slug-free Giancarlo StantonWho is on the IL with an ankle injury, the player DJ Limaheuwho suffers daily from a wrist injury and was not in the starting lineup for Thursday’s opening game against Rays.

In 1,329 games with the Cardinals, Carpenter fought 0.262 with 155 Homer and 576 RBI. His starting position was third base with the Cardinals, although he could also play first base and second base. He mostly played at first base during his brief stint at Round Rock.

Banuelos featured in the majors for Atlanta in 2015 and Chicago White Sox in 2019, going 4-8 with a 6.31 ERA in 14 starts and seven relief appearances. Banuelos is 0-2 with a 2.35 ERA in five starts and two relief appearances for Scranton, writing off 30 and walking 12 in 30⅔ innings.

Panuelos, a member of the Mexican stadium staff at last year’s Olympics, split the 2021 season between Taiwan’s Fobon Guardians and Mexico’s Sultans de Monterrey.

New York hired outright musk Rob Brantley to the Rail Riders. The Yankees opened positions in the active 26-man roster by picking left-hander JB Sears and defensive back Estefan Floreal to Scranton after a 2-0 win on Wednesday.
