Refugees mainly go to border countries
Celine Schmidt, spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), estimates that the number of Ukrainian refugees in neighboring countries is 3.4 million. According to a spokesman, Poland has more than 2 million Ukrainian refugees. Other countries bordering Ukraine, such as Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Moldova, hold large numbers of refugees.

Prior to the conflict, Ukraine had a population of 37 million in government-controlled areas, excluding Russian-annexed Crimea and pro-Russian separatist areas in the east.
