The disaster comes a week after another accident involving Antonov. On July 6, an AN-26 crashed while landing on the Kamchatka Peninsula (Far East), killing all 28 people on board. Basically made in Soviet times, Antonovs is still used in civil and military aviation throughout the former Soviet Union. They have been involved in many dangerous accidents in recent years.

The plane, which went missing on Friday, was built in 1989, according to Interfox. It was operated by the national company Aeroflot, then in Kyrgyzstan in 2014 before entering service in Chilaw. This type of short-haul aircraft has a capacity of 17 passengers.
