LONDON (Reuters) – A man arrested after crashing his car into the gates of the British prime minister’s home in central London was released in this case but immediately re-arrested for taking inappropriate pictures of children, police said Saturday.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that the 43-year-old suspect was arrested for an unrelated offense shortly after being released pending further investigation into the incident.
The collision Thursday afternoon outside the prime minister’s official residence and offices at 10 Downing Street prompted an intense security response.
Authorities later said the incident was not believed to be terrorism-related. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and criminal damage.
It was not immediately clear if the accident was intentional. Video posted on social media showed a silver hatchback driving straight into the gates at low speed across Whitehall, the main street in London’s government district.
No one is hurt.
The man will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday in connection with an unrelated charge of taking indecent photographs of children.
