Limited operation of NJ Transit train service to NY Penn due to Portal Bridge – NBC New York problem

Date:

NG Transit said NG Transit operates “limited” rail service with widespread delays in and out of New York’s Penn Station due to persistent signaling issues on the Gate Bridge signal.

PATH honors NJ Transit rail tickets at Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd St-NY stations, as well as NJ Transit and private buses, according to the transportation agency.

Midtown Direct service has been shifted to Hoboken.

It is unclear how the delays will affect the afternoon rush hour, as there is no estimate that service will be fully restored, according to NJ Transit.

The limited rail service comes after NJ Transit trains were suspended for Thursday hours due to ongoing bridge problems.

NJ Transit and Amtrak are replacing the century-old two-lane Portal Bridge built in 1910 over the Hackensack River with a higher bridge that won’t have to open and close for river traffic, According to the NJ Transit website.

“Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bridge carried more than 450 trains per day of Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT and 200,000 commuters per day across the Hackensack River — an important link in the busy region between Newark, New Jersey and Penn Station, New York,” said NJ Transit.

However, NJ Transit notes that the bridge has, over the years, become “a major bottleneck and source of delay, particularly when the old bridge malfunctioned during the opening and closing of marine traffic.”
