“No casualties have been recorded so far,” the city’s mayor Vitaly Klitschko said.

Regularly targeted by Russian missiles, Kyiv jumped this Saturday morning. Two loud explosions were heard in central Kiev shortly before air warning sirens sounded in the Ukrainian capital.

«According to initial reports, the air defense worked against ballistic weapons. Warning continues, stay in shelters“, the mayor of the city, Vitaly Klitschko, said in Telegram. “No casualties have been reported so far“, he added after a while.

Two streaks of white smoke

AFP journalists saw two streaks of white smoke in the sky shortly before two explosions, possibly left by two Ukrainian anti-aircraft missiles. Air-raid warning sirens rang out in the capital, which was last hit by Russian airstrikes in late September.

Last winter, systematic strikes in Ukraine’s energy system left thousands of homes without heat. On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his country had deployed new air defense systems provided by its Western allies in anticipation of a new wave of Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
